For all the advances we’ve made in toy technology, metals, plastics, electronics, there is something about wooden toys that seem so reliable. It seems that no other material could match simplicity with versatility. It is one of the oldest materials from which toys were made, so wooden toys almost never seem outdated. Wood is affordable and long-lasting, usually constructed with less risk of lead-based finishes that are used on toys of other materials, and usually less suited to small parts that could be accidentally swallowed. The risk of splintering depends on the quality of the wood, the wood grain, as well as the quality of the sanding and finishing. From building blocks, to doll houses, to xylophones, wood is a warm and familiar material. Depending on the paint or varnish, some wooden toys may even have the advantage of being water-resistant.
