Little Jack Horner

Little Jack Horner sat in the corner
Eating his Christmas pie,
He put in his thumb and pulled out a plum
And said What a good boy am I!

Little Jack Horner - History, Origin or Meaning of Lyrics

In the earlier centuries, it was a widespread practice to put valuables inside a pie to disguise it from thieves. It is said that this nursery rhyme is actually a true account of John Horner, more commonly known as 'Jack', who is the steward to the last bishop of Glastonbury during the 16th century before the termination of the monasteries by King Henry the VIII to own its wealth. Being the last abbot, he sent Horner to gift or possibly to bribe the king with a pie containing deeds to 12 manors including the Mells Park that was regarded to be the best because of the lead (plumbus) mine within in. There are two speculations as to how the deed came to the hands of Horner: that he stole it from inside the pie or he was indeed knighted and it was given to him as a gift or reward.
